I don’t know how I got so lucky the first time April Smith asked me to photograph her family. It was one of my favorite sessions of 2010, so, when April asked that I photograph them again this year—this time, as a family of four—I was giddy to get to hang out with someone I’ve come to adore. Not to mention getting to spend time with her sweet kiddos (Jack, the oldest? Oh April, look out — he’s gonna steal some girl’s heart some day ;) and Finn, the baby? I could have eaten him with a spoon). April and her husband, Dustin, have such a comfortable kind of love–the kind that comes with having spent so many great years building a marriage and then creating this beautiful blessing of a family. It’s a privilege to get to photograph them and a reminder of how grateful I am for the friendships I’ve made because of my photography business.
PS – Did I mention her house is fantastic? (I think I might have). And they were up for anything I asked of them? (Like, getting in the bath tub). Because, well, really, I thought last year’s session was hard to top and then, BOOM. Here we go with 2011. You’re going to love these ……
Internet, meet Finn Smith. I told you that you’d want to eat him up ;)
I know, I know — they’re precious, right? As April had shared with me, she really wanted some one-on-ones with her kiddos since, being the gal who’s behind the camera as a photographer herself, she never gets these kind of images on her own! Yes, yes…I think we’ve all established we want April’s living room! I’m titling these next two frames “Life With Little Boys”. Classic, right? We might have had a little ice cream time in the kitchen after story time on the couch. And yes, I want her kitchen (and that awesome retro table) now too.You guys, I ALMOST didn’t ask for these. I love April’s bathroom so much and that classic claw-foot tub was screaming “Photograph me” and even though April had said “Seriously, Gail, we’re down for anything” I was so nervous to ask that they get in the tub. Smith clan, you are amazing sports, because these photos? Hands-down some of the most fun family shots I’ve ever captured! GAH!!! If you can’t tell, April and Dustin are way cool parents. Some day, Jack will look at these and know this to be true. Last year, Grandma Smith watched Jack so we could take some sweet maternity photos of April with Dustin. This year, Grandma Smith watched Jack AND Finn so we could get these gorgeous frames. April, your vision for this part of the day was PERFECT — love what you two are wearing!
Two of the easiest people I’ve ever photographed. Truly. I love ‘em! And thennnnnn…Dustin’s Harley. And April looking amazing. And a field. Yep, that’s hot. I saw this patch of light through the trees and knew pictures needed to be made there. FAVORITE of the day. April, you look so so beautiful here. The light? Pretty beautiful too. Oh, Jack Smith. You were trying to steal my heart that afternoon, weren’t you? Little brothers who want to climb on big brothers make it difficult to get a family shot like this. Nevertheless, I kind of love it all the same :) And finally, because it felt fitting to end the way we ended last year, we have the walk back home. April, thank you again for hiring me for this! To the Smith family, love you guys!
