In trying to come up with an idea for this month’s self portrait — another month filled with more of the daily grind—I remembered that a highlight of my June was receiving this absolutely STUNNING costume headpiece in the mail from New York City-based milliner Dara Kent-Cobb for Preston & Olivia.
When I found out I won, I first had to laugh because I didn’t even remember entering a contest! (How’s that for the frazzled brain of a multi-tasking mama?) I emailed a photo of the headpiece to Nick and he wrote back, “It’s gorgeous. Now you can wear it to all those West Egg parties!” (Side note: If you find a man who can make specific references to the plot of Great Gatsby, hold on to that man as I did and never let him go).
The truth of the matter is, I don’t have a single occasion—as of this moment—for which I would need a party headpiece like this. Because I’m not much of a party planner myself, I likely won’t be throwing any 1920s themed gatherings any time soon. BUT I love knowing if and when I’m ever invited to said soiree, I know exactly what I’ll be wearing. More importantly, for any of my friends out there reading this, if YOU should be invited to a Gatsby-themed bash then, by all means, get a hold of me and ask about borrowing this! It’s far too beautiful to spend all of its time inside a box!
On a final note, I want to take this experience as an opportunity to encourage all of you—BRIDES TO-BE ESPECIALLY—to check out more of the uber-stylish Dara’s work over at Preston & Olivia. Her bridal collection is stunning and if I could do my own wedding all over again, I would for sure be wearing one of her headbands or cage veils. And in a nod to the wonderful way in which the Internet can work, I have to give a shout-out to Dara’s husband, Trent, for introducing me to his wife’s work. I first connected with Trent years ago through an online photography forum and have loved keeping up with him as his career has blossomed in NYC. So thankful for the many ways in which my photography career has introduced me to some of the coolest people. These two (aren’t they fun?) are definitely high on that list!
