In the six years that have passed since she photographed my wedding day, Amanda and I have become fast friends. (Even better, our husbands get along like peas and carrots too!)
One of the many many things Amanda and I have bonded over through the years is our mutual love for our grandmothers. When I lost my paternal grandmother shortly after my 29th birthday, I deeply mourned her passing and regretted the fact I’d never taken the time to get professional photos taken with her.
And I knew Amanda felt that way about her grandmother too — that she didn’t want to let the opportunity pass her by to do the same. This year has been a big year for Amanda and her hubby, Nate. The two welcomed their son, Ruben, into their lives in January (and if you want to watch the SWEETEST video of their adoption story, click on this link!). His entrance into their world made the idea of capturing Amanda with Ruben and his “GG” (great grandma) even more special.
So on a sunny morning on a hot August day, we finally made those family portraits happen. I’m so glad we did, too, as posting these images brings the biggest smile to my face. I may not have photos like this with my grandmother, but I’m so glad that, thanks to this day together, Amanda can cherish a set of her own forever.
Amanda took time to write out a special letter of love and thanks to her grandmother. She teared up while reading it and, I have to admit, I was doing the same behind my camera! This is the kind of gratitude so many of us wish we share with our loved ones, often when it’s too late. I’m glad Amanda took the time to truly share with her grandmother how much she means to her in such a special way. Oh Ruben…I don’t know anybody who’s met this boy who doesn’t just get sucked in by that sweet face! Amanda and her grandmother share the same beautiful, mega-watt smiles, don’t they? I loved how Ruben took a liking to the jewels on GG’s blouse! It’s like he’s auditioning for Baby Gap! Amanda’s grandmother is 90. DOESN’T SHE LOOK AMAZING?!!! I want to look that kind of forever young. What a special lady! We ended our session back inside GG’s house, spending some special time watching the carousel that Ruben has come to love so much (which, being inside that home just took me back to MY grandmother’s house — all the knick knacks, the sentimental photos and mementos … I told Amanda she was lucky to still have this in her life).
Amanda, I’m SO glad (and honored) that you asked me to do this! I love how big your heart is and how much it stretches to love so many beautiful people in your life!
