This isn’t my typical self-portrait, as in, a photo that I took myself. No, this month’s self-portrait** is courtesy of a friend of mine here in town, the lovely Jaime Faulkner. About two years ago, through my day job, I attended a gathering for a local social media group (comprised of community members and business owners from the area interested in social media) where I first heard Jaime speak. We struck up a friendship from there and, earlier this year, Jaime reached out to me, asking if I’d consider speaking to the group about blogging.
Me? Speak about blogging? I felt totally out of my element at the idea (maybe because, in my head, I STILL–seven years and countless blog posts later—feel like only a handful of my family members read my blog), but I couldn’t turn this sweet girl down! Which is how, last Thursday, I found myself in front of 30 or so folks from Muncie, sharing a few lessons I’ve learned along the way over the course of my blogging…hmmm..career? Nahhh, that doesn’t seem like the right word. Nor does journey, really. But you get my drift here…
It really was an honor for me to put myself out there like this. While I might have gone into this experience feeling as though I was doing Jaime a favor, it truly was the other way around. I fielded some excellent questions from attendees, got to network with some incredible people, and felt my confidence as a blogger grow after those 30 minutes in front of everyone. When someone shared with me afterward, “You really knew what you were talking about up there,” it made my day. After all, blogging IS something I’m certainly passionate about.
Most definitely a highlight of my August. And, if you’re from the east central Indiana area and are interested, check out the ECI Social Media Group (you can also “Like” them on Facebook). It’s open to professionals who work in and/or are interested in social media and is a great way to meet people!
**I must point out that apparently I’m trying to work my green pants into as many self-portraits this year as I can :)
